Host Odisha won the girls’ title in the 61st School National Rugby Tournament, defeating Maharashtra 32-10 in the final at KIIT Stadium here today. Earlier in the semifinals, Odisha beat Jharkhand 10-0, while Maharashtra got the better of Delhi 22-5. On their way to the semifinals, Odisha girls thrashed Delhi 25-5 and Gujarat 53-0.
Odisha missed out on a double as their boys settled as runners-up after losing the final against Maharashtra 0-20. Earlier in the last-four round, Maharashtra prevailed over Chhattisgarh 22-0 and Odisha scraped past Bihar 14-5. Before reaching the semifinals, Odisha boys blanked Jammu & Kashmir 41-0.
Bhubaneswar MP Prasanna Patsani, KIIT founder Dr Achyuta Samanta, Bhubaneswar (North) MLA Priyadarshi Mishra, Odisha Rugby Football Association Upendra Kumar Mohanty, School Games Federation of India observer Himanshu Sharma and KIIT Sports Director Gaganendu Dash graced the closing function as guests.
